MICHAEL Jackson's lead guitarist, Australian Orianthi Panagaris, yesterday told of emotion behind the scenes at the memorial.

The Adelaide-born musician sang We Are The World during the service, which new figures reveal was seen by more than 31 million viewers in the US alone.

"It was a real honour to do that," she said.

During the two-hour tribute at Los Angeles' Staples Center on Wednesday, Panagaris, 24, joined some of the biggest names in music including Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Usher.

"We thought we'd be playing the show, not his memorial," said Panagaris, who sang a short solo during the ballad.

She admitted she burst into tears after Jennifer Hudson sang Jackson's Will You Be There."I started bawling, that's why I had the sunglasses on," she told The Daily Telegraph.The guitarist had only had two hours sleep before the service.

"We were rehearsing right up until 11.30 the night before, then we had to be up early," she said.

Panagaris had been due to play with Jackson in the comeback tour he was planning to launch before his June 25 death.

She saw him the night before he died at a rehearsal.

"He was so ready to go, so excited and happy," she said. "He wanted to do it for the fans."

Jackson personally chose the Australian to play lead guitar in his comeback shows after a choreographer had asked her to audition for him.

"I'm just glad I can say I had that amazing, surreal opportunity," she said.

« Nous pensions que nous jouerions le spectacle, pas son mémorial » dit Panagaris qui a chanté un petit solo durant la ballade.

Elle a admit avoir éclaté en sanglots après que Jennifer Hudson eu chanté la chanson « Will you Be There ? » de Jackson. « J’ai commencé à pleurer vraiment fort, c’est pour cela que j’avais des lunettes de soleil » dit-elle au Daily Telegraph. La guitariste n’avait dormi que deux heures avant la cérémonie.

« Nous avions répété jusqu’à 23h3 la nuit précédente, et nous devions nous lever tôt » a-t-elle dit.

Panagaris aurait du jouer avec Jackson pour la tournée retour qu’il avait l’intention de lancer avant sa mort le 25 Juin.

Elle l’avait vu la nuit avant sa mort, en répétition.

« Il était tellement prêt à le faire, tellement impatient et content », dit-elle. « il voulait le faire pour ses fans ».

Jackson a choisi personnellement cette Australienne pour jouer la guitare principale pendant ses spectacles après qu’un chorégraphe lui ait demandé d’auditionner pour lui.


« Je suis juste heureuse de povour dire que j’ai eu une incroyable, surréelle opportunité » dit-elle.

[Internet] Orianthi Panagaris remembers final weeks working with her icon, Michael Jackson

Now when the Australian guitarist, singer and songwriter talks about those weeks she spent with the King Of Pop, rehearsing for his This Is It tour, she sounds grateful for the brief opportunity and happy to celebrate the memories.

Ori, as she is known to friends and family, recalls her disbelief when Jackson's musical director Michael Bearden sent the 24-year-old guitarist a message on her MySpace page, asking if she would be interested in auditioning for the pop icon's band.

Of course she thought it was a joke. How else would a young Australian woman asked to play solos made famous by Eddie Van Halen, Slash and Steve Stevens respond? But Bearden and Jackson had checked out her credentials online and liked what they saw in the striking and talented guitarist.

"I didn't think it was for real at first," Panagaris says from her Los Angeles home.

"Mike Bearden told me to learn Beat It, Dirty Diana and Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'. I don't think I've ever been that nervous before.

"You know, walking into that audition and thinking about all the amazing guitar players who have played with MJ, it becomes really daunting. I wasn't even thinking about meeting him."

It took the same steely resolve which saw her confidently open for Steve Vai on tour when she was a teenager and trade licks with Carlos Santana when MJ, as the band and dancers called him, walked into the audition room.

"Michael came in and sat on the couch and I was told to play Beat It. He was sitting there just looking at me, staring into my face, watching every single thing I was doing."

Her next test was to keep up with the man himself.

"He was walking up and down at the front of the stage and asked me if I could play the Beat It solo while I followed him around at the pace he was walking at. He hired me that night," she says.

Panagaris saw Jackson the night before he died. They had rehearsed until after midnight and everyone was buzzing. The tour was due to start in less than three weeks and the close-knit group of musicians and dancers had hit their stride.

"We were all together for three months; it felt like family. All of us were big fans of MJ; the first time he danced in front of me I freaked out. He was a musical icon, yes but he was so nice, encouraging us, wanting us all to shine."

Panagaris gets her chance to shine both in the Michael Jackson's This Is It documentary which coincides with the release of her debut record Believe.

The album was always scheduled to be released now, in a break between the run of 50 concerts at London's O2 arena.

Panagaris can't wait to come home and celebrate the release and may do so sooner than later with reports she is being courted to perform a tribute to Jackson at this year's ARIA Awards.

"I want to come back and play shows," she says. "I spent three years making the record and three days ago, I finally got a copy of it in my hands. It's been a big journey."

« Mike Bearden m’a dit d’apprendre « Beat it », « Dirty Diana » et « Wanna Be Startin ‘ Somethin ‘ ». Je crois que je n’avais jamais étée aussi nerveuse auparavant.

« Vous savez, aller à cette audition et penser à tous ces incroyables guitaristes qui ont joué avec Micheal Jackson, c’est très impressionnant. Je n’imaginais même pas le rencontrer. »

Il lui a fallu la même volonté d’acier qui l’avait mise en confiance face à Steve Vai en tournée lorsqu’elle était adolescente et les mêmes pincements de lèvres ( ?) que Carlos Santana lorsque Michael Jackson, quand le groupe et les danseurs l’appelèrent, était entré dans la salle d’audition.

« Michael est entré et s’est assis sur le canapé et on m’a dit de jouer « Beat it ». Il est assis juste là à me regarder, à fixer mon visage, regardant chaque détail de ce que je faisais. »

« Il montait et descendait du devant de la scène et m’a demandé si je pourrais jouer le solo de Beat It en le suivant au même rythme que lui. Il m’a engagée cette nuit » dit-elle.

Panagaris vit Jackson la nuit avant sa mort. Ils s’étaient entraînés jusqu’après minuit et tout le monde était en effervescence.

« Nous avions étés tous ensembles pendant trois mois ; c’était comme une famille. Nous étions tous de très grands fans de Michael jackson ; la première fois qu’il a dancé devant moi, j’ai flippé. Il était une icône de la musique, oui, mais il était si gentil, il nous encourageait, il voulait que l’on brille. »

Panagaris a eu l’occasion de briller dans le documentaire This is It sur Michael Jackson qui coïncide avec la sortie de son premier album Believe.

L’album avait toujours dû sortir maintenant, au moment d’une pause dans les 50 concerts à la London’s 02 Arena

Panagaris n’en peut plus d’attendre de rentrer à la maison pour célébrer la sortie et pourrait bien le faire rapidement puisqu’elle semble avoir été invitée à se produire lors d’un hommage à Michael Jackson aux ARIA Awards de cette année.

« Je veux revenir et faire des concerts » dit-elle. « J’ai passé trois années à faire l’enregistrement et il y a trois jour j’en ai enfin eu un exemplaire dans les mains. Ca a été une grande expérience. »
